When we at Vernon Union Church were considering installing a handicap lift (basically an elevator) in our building we made contact with several builders. Most of those we talked with were quite apprehensive to get involved as our building is over a century old and defies some of those characteristics that builders like to work with, such as plumb, level and square. We found you and your team ready and willing to accept the challenge and to work with the company we were purchasing the lift from.

There are several things that we appreciated about the manner in which you and your workers conducted your work. One of the most outstanding and which many members of the congregation made mention of was the effort put forth to be as clean as possible. Even with tearing out plaster and lathe and working with drywall, the dirt and dust we had to clean in preparation for our Sunday services and other activities was minimal. Tools, materials and conditions that could be a potential danger to children were always taken care of when the building was going to be used.

During the course of the project billing was very current and you kept us well informed of unexpected issues and needs of the building as the work progressed.

Addressing the quality of your work, the individual who installed our lift said, “It was perfect.” She also indicated the preciseness and quality of work was the best she had encountered.

In the fall of 2006, West Dummerston Builders, Inc. was recommended to us by Cotton Design Associates of Newfane to undertake interior renovation projects at our retirement home in the western section of Brattleboro. We planned to permanently move to Vermont from Princeton, NJ in the summer of 2007.

From the first meeting with Hal and Ken, we knew we had made the right choice. During the next 12 months, that first impression would grow and be reconfirmed again and again. As we completed the originally planned improvements, we concurrently discovered significant water damage to the structure caused by our location on the side of a hill and nonfunctioning drainage around the house’s perimeter. Throughout the process, of planned and unplanned construction, Hal and Ken dissected each situation, collaborated with David Cotton and others, presented creative alternative solutions and drove professional delivery of the agreed solutions. They also kept us constantly updated on progress, often by long-distance communication between Brattleboro and Princeton.

We have worked with several contractors during our 40+ years of marriage and rearing a family in multiple locations. We have never experienced the depth of professionalism and pride in their craft exhibited daily by Hal and Ken. This attitude extends to each member of the WDB team and their management of suppliers and subcontractors with whom they choose to work (even going to bat for us when necessary to rectify problems when their performance was below expectations). Hal and Ken Listen, work extremely hard for their clients, ask for (and deserve) fair compensation and, most importantly, keep their promises. In other words, they do what they say they will do when they say they will do it for the amount they say it will cost.

We heartily recommend and would happily work with Hal and Ken again, and actually hope to do so in the near future with additional improvements to our Brattleboro, Vermont home.
